How to Make Your RYOBI NiCad Battery Work like NEW! While working on my new Solar Home Power Module (Soon to be offered on eBay), my trusty Ryobi 12V drill started wimping out on me. What was wrong? When I placed the battery on the Ryobi charger, the green and yellow light came on - and stayed on. Checking the manual I found that a faulty battery was indicated. Yikes! This great drill was just out of the two-year warrantee period and had seen an average to above average amount of use. However, I had taken very good care of it and it looks nearly new. I measured the battery voltage in both my batteries. One measured full voltage and the 'wimpy' battery was about two volts low. Checking the local building material superstore, I found the replacement battery for this drill to be around $40.00. Ouch! I did not want to replace a battery that I know darn well should still have lots of life in it. Why would I want to shell out that kind of money for a new battery, when I could buy a NEW drill for $79.00 and - get two new batteries with it? Looking over the newer Ryobi drills, I noticed some new features -but- they were smaller and lacked the power of my unit. My drill had a better, automated charger, and had two speeds compared to the single speed for the newer drill. I simply liked my older, more powerful drill for my applications. Decision time! Why couldn't I rebuild my battery and put new life in my still (relatively) new drill? How much would it cost? I decided to launch a concerted effort to answer those questions and rebuild this puppy. I would test to see if I could put a little money into my older drill and make it "gooder'n new". (That means, "as good as new" if you aren't from the South.) It only made sense NOT to toss a battery that was still partially functional. I knew from past experience that I should have at least 150 to 200 more recharges left on that power pak. That would give most folks another year or two of service! To make a long story short, I repaired my battery and it is working as good as ever! The best news is . . I fixed it for less than $3! With the simple procedures I developed, photographed and documented, I can share these little known secrets with others interested in conserving their money, time & resources. Side Note: The new DeWalt 18-volt battery retails for more than $70 each. Eeeeeeeyow! Now, YOU can take advantage of a shortcut by using my instructions and repair your own rechargeable batteries easily and cheaply. These principles apply to all brands of NiCad tool batteries! Black & Decker, Sears, Milwaukee, Porter Cable, Skil and others. You CAN use these plans for brands other than RYOBI. You must be able to disassemble your particular battery. Some batteries are thermally welded or glued and cannot be easily accessed. Check this first! ------------------------------------ NOTE: This is NOT the decades old "battery resurrection" method sold by another seller for $12.00. I have tried this method for years with dozens of NiCad Cells. It worked on about half of them BUT, only for a short time - - from a few hours to a few weeks. It is a TEMPORARY and unreliable fix. I do not include this info in my plans because of that very reason. -------------------------------------- Why rebuild? 1. To $AVE money! 2. With these instructions, it is quick and easy to refurbish almost ANY battery, any voltage. 3. To minimize pollution - NiCad batteries must have special disposal. Do your part for the environment by not disposing of materials that still have a long useful life. 4. You do not have to depend on others to keep your tools operating. 5. To conserve resources. 6.
